Tehachapi Renewable Transmission Project

Open TRTP Project Map (PDF)

Delivering Renewable Power Affordably Throughout Southern California

The Tehachapi Renewable Transmission Project (TRTP) is a series of new and upgraded high-voltage electric transmission lines and substations capable of carrying 4,500 megawatts of electricity (enough energy to supply three million homes) from renewable and other generators in Kern County south to San Bernardino County. The Project is designed to provide added capacity to strengthen SCE’s electrical system and also deliver clean, renewable energy to the region to help meet California’s renewable energy goals. SCE has completed construction of the 173 mile TRTP electric transmission line and energized the line fourth quarter of 2016. Throughout TRTP’s construction, SCE worked closely with local officials, property owners, residents, businesses and others in efforts to provide helpful project updates, minimize potential impacts and respond quickly to requests for information. We recognize that this has been a long process and thank you for your patience, support and willingness to work with SCE during the past several years. We look forward to being a good neighbor for many years to come.

Answers to Common Questions

When our infrastructure projects affect surrounding communities, there may be questions. We are committed to keeping you informed and up to date. Common questions include:

  • Why our proposal uses overhead electric transmission lines instead of underground
  • Why underground lines are so much costlier
  • How infrastructure decisions are made by regulators

Go to Questions & Answers >

  • Kern County: Tehachapi and unincorporated areas including Rosamond, Mojave
  • Los Angeles County: Altadena, Baldwin Park, Diamond Bar, Duarte, El Monte, Hacienda Heights, Industry, Irwindale, Lancaster, La Canada Flintridge, La Habra Heights, Monrovia, Montebello, Monterey Park, Palmdale, Pasadena, Rosemead, Rowland Heights, San Gabriel, Santa Clarita, Whittier, Acton, Avocado Heights, Antelope Acres, Leona Valley, Vincent, Quartz Hill
  • San Bernardino County: Chino, Chino Hills, Ontario

The project includes transmission facilities equaling 250 miles (spanning an area of approximately 173 miles) that will deliver electricity from renewable wind energy generators in Kern County southward through Los Angeles County and eastward to the existing Mira Loma Substation in Ontario.

Southern California Edison (SCE) wants to thank the cities and community for their patience in finalizing the Tehachapi Renewable Transmission Project (TRTP), as we fully energized the 500 kV transmission line this 4th quarter of 2016. The project will provide added capacity to deliver enough power from renewable and other generation sources to power three million homes. It will enhance electric service reliability in the region and help meet California’s renewable energy goals.
