Natural Substation Project

null

Southern California is in the process of building the Natural Substation Project, which will serve Southern California Gas Company’s (SoCalGas) Aliso Canyon Turbine Replacement Project. The Natural Substation Project will provide power to new electric compressors that will be installed by SoCalGas at its Aliso Canyon Storage Facility.

The Natural Substation Project has several components:

  1. Construction of the new. 56-megavolt-ampere (MVA), 66/12 kV, Natural Substation at the Aliso Canyon Gas Storage Facility
  2. Modifications of existing 66 kV electrical line:
    • Modify approximately 8 miles of an existing electrical line between SCE’s Newhall Substation in Santa Clarita and the new Natural Substation
    • Replace 57 existing towers and poles with 51 new tubular steel poles
      • Existing towers and poles range in height between 40 and 109 feet
      • New tubular steel poles will range in height between 60 and 125 feet in height (the average height for most locations will be 80 feet)
    • The new tubular steel poles will be primarily installed along the same route of the existing electrical line
  3. Installation of new equipment and replacement of three existing towers (approximately 60 feet in height) with three new tubular steel poles (approximately 80 feet in height) within SCE’s existing San Fernando Substation
